Pitot gauges measure the pressure created by the movement of the water—the flow (velocity) pressure in psi. The probe faces into the stream and captures the pressure generated by the flowing water, which firefighters use with charts to estimate nozzle flow. It does not measure static pressure (that’s read by a static port), nor does it measure temperature or a valve’s pressure drop at zero flow. The key idea is that the Pitot gauge reads the dynamic component of pressure produced by flow, not ambient static pressure.
